If you have ever seen an older couple holding hands as they share a smile, you may have found yourself wondering how they made it work. How do people maintain relationships for years on end when most can’t make it even a couple of months?

Of course, some people are just not compatible, but there are so many couples that just give up as soon as the first obstacle comes their way, which makes it hard to believe that the relationship was important at all. What do some people know about relationships that others seem to be missing?

The truth is that everyone can have a prosperous loving, happy, and healthy relationship if they put in the work. That is an important thing to know. Relationships take work.

Many people believe that relationships will just work themselves out on their own, but that is not how it works. Nothing in life works out on its own. You have to be willing to work at it.

  • Communication- Communication is the most important part of your relationship. If something is upsetting you or you are not interested in what your partner is, it is up to you to let them know. People do not have the ability to read minds. The only person that you are hurting by keeping all of your feelings bottled up is you. When you do not speak up or communicate with your partner, you will end up blowing up later and saying things that you will regret later. When you communicate, you are able to find a middle ground with the other person and avoid a confrontation. You should never be afraid to speak your mind to your partner and embrace the way you feel.
  • Honesty & Trust- Without honesty and trust in your relationship, there is no relationship. You cannot have any communication if you cannot be honest with and trust your partner. When you are honest with your partner, they have no reason to not trust you or to doubt you. Trust is a must if you want a relationship that is strong and successful. You don’t want to have to spend your time worrying about what your partner is doing or overthinking what they have said. You don’t have to change your entire life just because you are in a relationship when your relationship is filled with honesty and trust. When you are honest with your partner, and they can trust you, it means that you can still be your own person, you can still go out with your friends, and you can still have fun. By being honest with your partner and not hiding anything from them, you are reassuring them that they have nothing to worry about.
  • Love and Affection- There is not much point in a romantic relationship if there is no love or affection involved. If you miss out on love in life, you have missed out on life. This may strike you as an odd statement at first, but what is the point of being wealthy and successful if you have no one in your life to share it with? Love is the greatest gift in life. It allows people to build a life that many can only dream of. Love is not all you need, though. In order to have a healthy relationship, you are going to need a lot more than love, but, in the end, if you don’t have love, there is no point in the relationship. Take time each day to show affection to your partner. Make it a priority to kiss, hug, and have sex with your partner to ensure that your relationship is healthy. Remember, every relationship struggles, but strong ones survive.
  • Forgiveness- No relationship is going to be perfect. Relationships are made up of people who are not perfect, yet we expect our relationships to be perfect. The truth is that people make mistakes all of the time, and we make mistakes in our relationships as well. There are some mistakes that people make that are unforgivable, such as cheating, but there are many mistakes that should be forgiven. There is no reason to hold a grudge against your partner for minor mistakes that your partner makes when that grudge could end your relationship. Instead, practice forgiveness and show your partner some love and understanding. Sometimes all it takes is for one partner to tell the other, “I understand, and I forgive you,” to make everything better.
  • Respect- When you genuinely love someone, you are going to treat them with respect. You cannot treat a person with disrespect and claim to love them at the same time. Respect should be the foundation of your relationship. You can show respect to your partner by being careful of the words that you use, honoring their boundaries, compromising, being considerate, and showing them that you care about them. It is also vital that you make sure that you are being respected by your partner. You need to know what your worth is, behave honorably, create boundaries, and stick to them, keep your word, and be respectful of yourself. Show appreciation for your partner and who they are. Let them know that you are thankful for all of the things that they do for you and for the support that they give to you.

It is crucial when you are in a relationship not to get so caught up in life that you forget to focus on the relationship. Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we forget to spend time focusing on our relationships, and they fall apart. However, when a relationship has these five building blocks, they will be strong and can make it through some of the roughest patches. Even when we are busy and don’t have a lot of time to focus on them, they are still strong, and our partners always know just how much we love them. However, try to show your partner how much you care every day. Even the smallest gestures can make a significant impact on your relationship.
